Setting the Right Atmosphere for Denture Care
New patients are bound to have many questions, this section of our website is designed to aid in answering some questions. For any further information please call us or book an appointment.
-
Q. When should I have a check up?A. There are a lot of factors that affect denture fit and function. There is a lot of force applied to these units every day. Teeth can get worn down and sometimes dentures need to be professionally cleaned. Dentures should be checked for fit on a 6 to 12 month cycle. This is due to the fact that the patients ridges resorbe at a very slow rate. But over time this can result in a less accurate fit. At that point we can refit the denture with a procedure called a reline.

Q. Can my broken denture be fixed?A. In order to adequitely answer that question we need to examine the denture, usually if there is a clean fracture, the denture can be repaired. Issues usually develop when people try to repair it themselves. This is because they can use adhesive for other materials preventing the fracture from being reassembled correctly.
-
Q. Are denture adjustments normal?A. Yes absolutely, once a set of dentures are made, 'post insertion' adjustments are alsomst always nessisary. This is due to the nature of the tissue covering the bone. Some areas of this tissue will be thinner than others. When the denture moves, ever so slightly durring use, there will be points from this relative position that will require adjustments.
-
Q. What if I keep getting sore spots with my dentures?A. This can happen for a variety of reasons and requires a thorough exam to determine the cause of the issue. One of the reasons is that the dentures do not fit well anymore, this is not the standard for denture care and can be dealt with in a clinic by a denturist.
-
Q. Why did my denture fracture?A. Due to the fact that the ridges resorbe the dental arch will not offer the same support that it did when the dentures were first made. While a reline can reestablish the support, if we go without the support for a time, the denture can experience an uneven distrubution of force, resulting in a fracture. If this denture can be repaired then it will also likely require a reline to reestablish the support and thus prevent another fracture.
-
Q. Can a missing tooth on my dentures be replaced?A. Absolutely there are a number of reasons why denture teeth can fall out. The reason as to why the tooth or teeth become dislogeged should be analyzed before replacing them. This is more common with dentures that are older and have been used for many years.
